Carrabelle, No joy - 30Nov04..

Post by qoutrage »

We gave it our best try. 'Launched at about 10AM, into a 8-10kt SE wind and
light chop at the mouth of the river. Mostly sunny and about 68 degs.
We had hoped to have the lines in the water by 11 or so. I think the wx dudes
said ta expect 10-15 LTCP- We're hoping, they might be on the high side
'Bout halfway to Dog Island, Freddy, my neighbor and the captain, realized the GPS is
in the truck.
Who needs GPS?? We'll just do it the old loran way (Si-Tex EZ-7).
I wondered if this might be the omen we all dread- What will the rest of the day
be like. Yep, 'think, I might have been right.
At the east end of DI, the light chop turned to 3' seas with a period of 2 seconds
(at least that's what it looked like).
At about 3 miles off DI, the intensity of the wave action picked up, looking more
like 4'+. We were chuggin' along at about 5 kts- I'm thinking, maybe we'd be
fishing by noon.
At this point, without any discussion, the Captain, Freddy, decided he'd had enough.
Retreat..
With this, we thought, we'd give the white trout a shot on the south side of DI.
Nothing happening there, so moved to the westend near the wreck- Nothing there.
Moved to the east end of SGI- Nothing there.
'Forgot to tell ya- We were fishing with dead shrimp on the bottom, mostly, not that it mattered.
My thoughts wonder, if Steve and the other guy, who backed out at the last minute,
were right on to stay home and split wood and change the oil in truck. Goah, 'that'
must be fun.
Who'd rather be fishin' and not catchin' anything?? Raise ya hand..
Then, as a last ditch effort to catch a fish, we decided to work the mouth of
the river for a trout or maybe a red. Low and behold, we got into the little
specks, picking up 6 or 8 in the 12" range- No keepers. At about 1:30 Freddy
decided, we had better go before, we got hit by a shrimp boat.
In the driveway at 2- A little smelly, but not skunked..
Wha'd they say? Better than a stick in the eye or something.

You could have spent the day in the best hospital in the state.

Sorry it wasn't a good day for ya, Goutrage. Don't know that I would have opted for wood splitting, or oil changing. But, some days it's better to sit on the porch and talk about fishin.
What was I supposed to do today?
