Carrabelle- 29 Dec 04

Post by qoutrage »

'Put in at the Tiki Hut around 10-1030.
With 12 trailers already parked, it appeared others were out to getum, too.
We were a party of 4 with Freddy, his son David and Sergal(sp?) an aquaintance of Freddy's, and myself. Sergal is a transplant from the TPA area with lots of on the water experience, so added colorful dialogue to the all day BS session.
The tide was fairly low, and the ride out beyond DI was on '2 to 3', and a little brisk with temp around 50....Nice day, though.
Our first position was about 8 miles off the island, and we had bait in the water by about 1100.
Slow would describe the activity at the first hole with only a couple of short gags and a red or two to show. We moved about 3 times by noon or one with no particular luck. Around two the water settled down to about 1 foot and the bite picked up. We were offering LYs, sardines and squid- Likely, live would have been better.
One 24 inch gag caught by Freddy and a nice mess of black bass was all we had to show on the ride back to the river.
Radio chatter was light, but we did hear reports of some amount of success on other boats- one reporting 6 keepers and another with 5, another 3.
Our total catch amounted to 15-20 shorts, 21 blacks and 5 or 6 grunts.
We had the blacks for supper- fried up with hushpuppies and cheese grits and frys.. Good eating.

Pics snagged from DV, so quality not that good- Left- Freddy and son with 24" gag- Right- 19" red- close, but no cigar.

Everthing considered, not bad for a day in Dec.

MJ, forgot to say, we fished at 51', 44',41',33',and 21'.
I thinks,we caught most of the grouper at the 41' position and near all the bass at 33'.
