Jigging for Grouper
Has anyone tried jigging for Grouper, I have a couple similar to the pic, but am not sure if your anchored is vertical jigging going to work.

I have used a 3oz glow jig head with a scamp (2 tailed) grub on it and it has worked very well. I just drop it to the bottom, reel up about 3 - 5 feet and start vertical jigging. If they are there it will not take long. We had a trip out of Carrabelle back in Oct that they were hitting it on the way down. Also great for Amberjack if the situation presents itself. If there is some current you will need at least 2 oz to get it to the bottom depending on how heavy of line you are using. If you realy want to try something different the try this- Texas rig a 10" or 12" black worm with a 1 or 2 oz weight and fish it around the structure just like you were bass fishing. Just a hint, if you even think you have a bite start pumping and reeling. This is a realy fun way to catch grouper but the angle of your line gives them a great advantage to get in a hole and cut you off. I know Culprit makes the over sized plastic worms, but I am sure there are other brands. I have the black with a silver belly on them and the grouper just can't resist.

Tom Keels fishing 101...circle hook, egg weight, bait...send to bottom, few cranks..stick in rod holder....Pick up rod with jig on it....send down the jig....start gigging.....Fish hits circle hook, put jig rod in holder, reel up fish and repeat......if you have two on at one time..have fun....

BTW the Bass Pro bucktails (SPRO) clones are cheaper and hold up just as good.....And if your in over 50 foot a bigger bucktail or curly tail will affect the descent rate of the lure, which can be good or bad, if the current is ripping it may never reach the bottom due to the lift (drag) created by the large tail or curly tail....The deep dropping article in the latest FS mentioned something to that extent….I experienced it off PC back in the fall as well…..
C-Quarters used to carry 8 oz unpainted jig heads pretty cheap. I bought all they had a couple of months ago and they haven't got any more in yet last I checked. Adding a glow in the dark split tail grub and jigging with 80 lb power pro on a penn 7500 in 150 ft of water is death to red grouper. The braid line and the spinning reel allow you to send it down fast and spend a lot more time fishing with less time reeling a bait up an down. Works great on a fast drift also because you can cast up drift from the boat and work it longer before you have to reel in and recast. Jigs and squid are all I use this time of year for AJ's.
I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd add to it anyway.
Since nothing seem to be biting, when we were out Tuesday, I decided to drop a jig.
I fooled this small red and had another one on, a drag ripper, for about 10 seconds- felt like a big o' good'un. ('Probably a 30 lber, since he got off...)
Our L/Y and squid offerings produced little or no activity.

That's Ted from Ellijay Ga. He's new to the panhandle, and like me, trying to learn about Big Bend fishing.
I will be buying more grouper jigging gear.
