Checked the tides and weather. Everything looked calm for Saturday morning. Decided to take my kids (4 & 5) to the flats for the first time. We launched at the lighthouse just after daylight and headed to the West Flats. I really didn't know how my kids would react to the flats. They've been fishing many times on the river and lake, from the bank, my jon boat, and my dad's pontoon boat, but this was their first saltwater experience other than fishing off the beach at Seaside. They had a blast and are hooked for life. I told Scott when I picked up some shrimp at Jerry's, this was the first time I ever had Snoopy and Mickey Mouse rods on my boat when I went to the flats. (He said we'd probably hook into a nice Cobia on Mickey). Actually, my son's first fish on the flats was a 16" trout caught on an 18" Mickey Mouse rod. I also caught a 24" trout out of the same school.
We fished until 10:00 am. We caught trout most of the morning just fishing around the tide line. We also had several cut-offs (probably from Spanish, but my kids just knew it was a JAWS). I don't think I'll get to do much fishing alone now. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a trip more.

PS - The grilled seatrout filets last night were great. How can children eat so much???

I've taken my litte boy(almost 4) out twice this year. He's still a little timid on the flats. Likes the river though(usually really calm.)
Only fish he's caught so far have been bream at our farm on the Scooby Doo rod. No saltwater fish to date. One day soon hopefully.

They woke up Sunday morning ready to go again. I had to look at some long faces over those bowls of Cherios when I said we couldn't go again for a couple of weeks.
They did enjoy grilling the filets last night, though.

I enjoyed the grilled ones we caught Saturday morning also. What a perfect day, wind wise for fishing, like a pond.
