Keaton 3/5/05
First time ever at Keaton so didn't know what to expect. Put in around noon. No wait at the ramp at that time. There was a tourney goin on, and lots of boats, so had to park quite a piece down the road.
Went north. Wind picked up big time. Two 15# mushroom anchors didn't/couldn't hold the 18" G3 sooooo...we slowly drifted every where we (me and Lucky Strike) fished. Water temp. was 57. Tried numerous places and fished our butts off. Trailered the boat at 6:30.
Afternoons Catch = 8 short spek and 1 just barely legal (all on bottom with jigs and candy corn, nuthin else worked...and Lord knows, we tried everything, except live bait)
We had a BLAST!!!!!
Questions:
1) Anyone have suggestions on a mo' better anchor(s) for my G3?
2) After the last channel marker going out, and North a little further, is that what is known as a "platform" or "bird rack"?

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

If you anchor you greatly increase your odds of not catching anything...If you anchor and fish for a few minutes to cover an area more efficently, that is different....Just make sure you don't loose track of time....
I would say invest in a sea anchor (drift sock) to slow your drift down, only deploy it if your catching fish, it will slow your drift...If your not catching fish don't deploy it, cause it will take twice as long to cover an area.....
Good job....which way did you go north or south?

A mushroom won't hold you well in a stiff breeze, except perhaps in real muddy bottom. Check out the small, "danforth style" anchors that can dig into the sand. There is a type with short blades that is heavier than the bigger models that would work well on a G3, IMO. Used to use one with my skiff.
Luck,
EJ

Hay Chalk,
We went North.
Also, when we put in, the green MAN was there. Talked with him a bit. He said that on Friday and so far Saturday he had not seen or heard of anyone catching any keepers (specks) at Keaton. Oh well.
And another $@#$! thing, if y'all need gas for the vehicle and/or boat for next weekend, ya may want to fill up in Tally, the CHEAPEST we saw in Perry is $2.05/gal. Sucked for me!!!!![/u]

Short Strike, knowing your situation, you need to stay in 5' of water or less. If you get into an area that's producing fish, you need to get out and hold the boat so Lucky Streike can catch the fish. This would accomplish 2 things:
1- She would have a ball.
2- she wouldn't blame me for you spending more money for the anchor.
Seriously, Chalk offered good advice. The drift sock would be a better investment. If you pass through an area and catch fish, push the mark button on your GPS. When you get out of the bite, crank up, get updrift of your mark, deploy the drift sock, and catchum up.

What was I supposed to do today?

Thanks to all for the advice on the anchor and the "birdrack".
TC: Lucky Strike saw what UPS brought you...she said "Don't we need to order some of that stuff?" Do you believe that??????????
She dearly loves this stuff and, as long as I "let" her catch more fish than me, she'll do what she can to keep it that way. She's eat up with this salt water fishin thing more than I am. Life is good at my house! By the way, she may try to sweet talk you into giving her a few of those baits to see if they would work for us...so be prepared.
