I got up early to check the NOAA Forecast....was taking out a few novices from the North and wanted to make sure the day wasn't going to be too bad. According to the forecast, the morning could have been a little choppy, but was supposed to lay down in the afternoon........WRONG!!!!! The only part of the forecast they got right was partly cloudy. We decided to launch at 7:30 and headed on out around Dog Island. The wind was blowing about 15 kts. and the seas were 2-3 with 4-5 on the swells. I ask my crew if they wanted to venture out and they said....sure. I decided that we were not going far......much to my dismay because I had a livewell full of pinfish (thanks to the Mashes Sands BP

). We anchored up on a hole 6 miles out and did not get the first bite. Decided to move 3 miles west to hole #2. I threw out a stretch 30 and decided to troll to the spot, due to our less than expected weather conditions

. About 1 mile into the troll the drag started running......a few minutes later we had our first fish of the day.....a keeper king......
We got a few more "hit & miss" along the way, but arrived at #2 about 30 minutes later. We set out the buoys and attempted to set a drift and anchor up.....man what a challenge. We started marking fish, so down went the livebait! BAMM....keeper red. Another pin down.......BAMM......keeper gag. So on, and so on. We stayed on this spot for 2 hours catching fish almost the whole time. We did manage a few short reds for the mix and no grunts or snapper to my amazement. We had to leave this spot on our own discourse due to the anchor rope breaking in the continual up and down "ride" in what had to be 5-6 ft. seas

But, we were catching some nice grouper, so the crew was happy. Not to mention the 3-4 breakoffs we encountered.....BIG FISH.....fought one for 15 minutes only to have it make one last lunge and break off. Just couldn't get them off the bottom or out of the structure. Anyhow, we decided to head in to one last spot near DI....trolling along the way. Caught 3 more keeper kings and had "something" hit like a run-away truck and spool off about 75 yards of line before taking it all....all I could do was watch the spool empty....that is gut wrenching! My guess was a BIG king. We reached our last hole for the day....soaking wet by this point. With no anchor, I decided to attempt to "hold the spot" while the other guys fished. They managed about 25 keeper rock bass before decided that they had had enough for one day...I agreed and we headed in getting slammed the entire way.....so much for "laying down in the afternoon".....thanks NOAA.
TOTAL FOR THE DAY:
4 KINGS (28"-35")
4 RED GROUPER
3 GAGS
25 ROCK BASS
This was definately one of the worst days I have had on the water in recent years (weather-wise)......I forgot to mention the 3 rain showers we experienced during the day also

. The fish bit well though...only wanted live bait. Tried LY's and squid with no takers (except the rock bass....they'll hit anything). The kings were caught on red/solid white Stretch 30's. Never even cared to look at the water temp but I would guess from the many times my hands were in it, about 70-72.
My keep of the day.....
