Lake Talquin Crappie Late Report 6-17-05

Post by Algaegator »

Launched the boat at Williams Landing at 0630, and headed across to where Little River joins the main lake. My fishin buddy, Curtis, is a Talquin veteran having fished the lake for some 30 odd years; so I gladly deferred to his superior knowledge regarding the location of Summer crappie holes. By 0700 we had the first fish in the boat, a nice 11 incher in 8 ft of water. The bottom machine was mostly silent, so we drifted around a bit trying to locate a concentration of fish. The bite was slow but steady most of the morning, and on one occasion we had four fish on at the same time. As the morning progressed the wind became a factor. The forcasted West wind was coming out of the South, and by 1030 it was blowin us around a bit; so we called it a day. The keeper to throwback ratio was fairly even. I estimate we cought around 20 fish 11 of which were keepers, and most were cought in 8 ft of water with the bait (gold minnows) on or close to the bottom. This is our catch for the day

And here's Curtis with his 2 largest. The larger is probably between 2 and 2 1/2 pounds.

Good job Algaegator and Curtis!

Those are some pretty Crappie! Coming from the Mid West originally, crappie were one of my favorites to fish for. Some of my fondest memories are from fishing at night... 4 or 5 boats tied up together bow to stern in a square over a crappie bed. We would hang lanterns over the side and fish in the middle. Lots of Fun! :-D
