St. Joe Bay 8/5/05

Post by birddog »

Tin Can and I arrived in Port St. Joe around 6:00 a.m. to large thunderstorms pushing onshore from the Gulf. After a little breakfast, we headed over to Presnells to wait out the lightning.

Gradually the lightning subsided and we were able to get out on the water. My plan was to show T.C. around and catch a few redfish. I haven't fished the Bay since Dennis came through so I wasn't sure what to expect. The water clarity in the bay is worse than I have ever seen it. A lot of the bay is dark with tannic water. The floating grass is way past normal for this time of the year. There are acres of grass mats in some places that you can't run a trolling motor through much less get a lure down through.

So, we fish my usual places with no luck. Finally, we start drifting the sand bars that wrap around the lower end of the Bay and T.C. is able to catch 2-18" redfish. We only saw 3 other redfish that I'm sure of. I know redfish are still there, I wish I had a couple of consecutive days to figure out how they have changed their habits.

I really enjoyed fishing with Tin Can and would highly recommend him as a partner if you get the chance. Even though it was a tough, wet day, it was still a good day to be out on the flats. Can't wait til next time.

Had Tin Can as a partner today and you're right, he's a pretty decent fellow. However, he did say something about you being lousy. I think maybe you should take me next time and leave him at home.

I think I said he was lousy looking.

I thoroughly enjoyed fishing with Birddog. If any of you ever get the oppertunity to have him guide you around, take it. He made sure I was cool and comfortable all day. :-D I'm looking forward to the next trip.

Birddog, thanks for a great day on the water.
What was I supposed to do today?
