Dad and younger brother are here for a visit. Without getting too specific on the location, it's a spot that's been productive for us for decades and generations. We took advantage of the full moon low and when the water was still almost waist deep at the beach, shortly after 6, we waded about 2/3 of a mile out to an old channel that cuts across the flats. I think the key to the spot is that it's an old, unmarked channel that doesn't see much traffic, it's deeper than the surrounding flats and always holds water even when the flats are exposed, like last night, and it's not straight, it's got a few twists and turns to it. Other old channels like this should also be as productive.
They were using MirrOlure Top Dogs and 7Ms. I stayed with a Yo-Zuri Mag Darter knock-off. We kept thirteen trout in the slot and our one over 20" each, released several others over 20". I have no idea how many shorts we released, but it was very many. For a while all three had a fish on every cast. We left because it was dark, we had a ways to walk back, we had all the fish we wanted and there was a thunder-boomer threatening off to the east, about 9, with the fish tearing it up on the surface. Saw a few Spanish jump in our little channel, but didn't catch any. Caught just a couple of ladyfish, one cut me off and swam away with my Mag Darter knock-off. Jigs produced only catfish. Once in a while we pull a cobia out of that hole, but not last night.
