FISHING DEEP

Post by CAPTAIN CHARLIE »

Thought I'd share a fish story with you.

I spent the last week with my daughter and son in law at their home in Delray Beach. We fished on his BERTRAM 28, which is tied at his back door a couple hundred yards off the intracostal. I have fished with him on the Bertram several times when we took the baot across to Bimini to fish.

Our first trip was bottom fishing, but we trolled on the way to buy fuel. After spending a million bucks on gas we trolled back to the bottom fishing spots. Along the way we hooked up a barracuda, as I got him to the boat Bill threw a line at several that followed him to the boat and we had two hooked up. We got them off and started bottom fishing, about 75' of water, and caught several nice snappers. But only three, and we headed for the hill 'cause it was hot as hell.

Two nights later we went SWORD FISHING, with Bill's friend who really knows how to fish for them. We headed out at dusk, and traveled about 20 to 25 miles south east. We were in thirteen to fourteen hundred feet of water.

The bait was very large squid, frozen, already rigged with leader and hook. He tied a glow stick to the bait and dropped it off the side of the baot to about 350'. We were drifting north at about 3mph. The second line was set at about 500 ft. And he blew up a baloon, tied it to the line with a rubber band and taped a light stick to it and let it drift away from the boat. The third bait was set out exactly like the second, with the baloon and light but at about 7 to 8 hundred feet.

The first hit we got was a big shark (we guessed) , and he just went through the wire leader like it wasn't there. Another hit caused a fight, on the second rig, and after about ten minutes of fightinmg the line went slack.

There were about a dozen boats in the area and all the baloons on the water lit up looked like a back yard party. It was also the night of the metior shower, and we watched the show in the sky. Quite different from how we fish around here.

Wrapped up about 2am and headed back to the house. Didn't have to clean any fish.

See you on the water,

Charlie

Very interesting  Thanks for taking the time to share the experience with us. Feel free to report with no fish any time! Good job Capt.
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".
