LANARK 8-25-05

Post by dolphinatic »

The forecast called for SEAS 1 FT. OR LESS, WIND 5 KTS, CHANCE OF LATE AFTERNOON SHOWERS. With such a nice prediction, I had two buddies decide to bring their dive gear along. Well, needless to say, they got this one completely wrong :x At 7:30 am we were greeted with rolling 3 footers on our way out of Lanark going towards the east end of DI. We opted to try a spot close in (35 ft.) that has produced some nice grouper the last 2 trips. We anchored up and could only manage grunts. After an hour or so, we decided to just "putt" on out to some deeper water and attempt to troll. That didn't work to well due to alot of floating grass. Eventually we got to the next spot and proceeded to start catching short grouper. We managed 3 keeper gags with a few nice break offs, so the boys decided to strap on their dive gear and go take a look. Visibility was awful, so they decided to head back to the boat. Needless to say, it was quite rough and they were getting knocked all over the place on the surface cursing NOAA the entire time. The joke of the day was that the seas had to be at least 14" not 1 ft. :smt005 We decided to head to another spot where we managed only grunts....AGAIN :x We decided to try one more spot on the way in and this is where we hit $$$ We got anchored up on some nice bottom and started marking fish everywhere. We sent down spanish sardines and started getting double hook-ups right away. Amazingly, no one payed attention to how rough it was :smt017 The old man in the back of the boat started hauling in snapper with squid. This went on for 1/2 an hour or so and when the bite slowed, we decided to call it a day. I knew we were going to have a longer than usual ride back in due to the 14" seas, and man was I right. We could only manage about 9-11 mph. on the way back in and got soaked the entire time :x Made it back to Lanark about 7:30 pm to find 2 guys just putting in. Told 'em "GOOD LUCK." They took a look at us, looked at each other, and then went out. We wished them well

TOTAL FOR THE DAY: 10 GAGS (22" - 30")
4 RED GROUPER
5 RED SNAPPER
LOTS OF GRUNTS
LOTS OF BARELY SHORT GROUPER

Most of the grouper were caught on spanish sardines with the biggest hitting a cut LY tail. The grunts and snapper mostly hit squid. We caught most of the fish in 60-70 ft. The water was very stained with the lowest visibility being in 40+ ft. Saw alot of floating fish...mostly grunts but a few small grouper
