Red Tide

Post by Aucilla »

Can we start a thread just on where to go or not go due to red tide? I haven't seen it up here yet, but I want to go out soon and it would be nice if folks find it somewhere to post it here.

Here's what the Democrap had to say today :-D

Apalachee Bay

Prior to Hurricane Katrina making landfall, trout and redfish were providing consistent action throughout Apalachee Bay. Various structure such as the oyster bars near the mouth of the St. Marks River, the Rock Garden, Grey Mare rock and Cobb Rocks are all good places to prospect. Live shrimp is working well, although top-water plugs, jigs and gold spoons have been equally effective. If you can't find the trout in shallow water, work the deeper flats up to 10 feet.
- Scott Paterna, Jerry's Bait and Tackle

Ochlockonee Bay

Live shrimp is the top offering for redfish, trout and sheepshead near the mouth of the river. Work the oyster and clam bars on moving water to find fish. The new moon tides this weekend should result in steady action.
- Juanise Hoover, Circle J's Bait and Tackle

Lanark Village/Carrabelle

Between the hurricane and red-tide problems, very few anglers have ventured offshore. Inshore, trout have been responding to live shrimp off Lanark Reef. Redfish are still common, particularly around structure or the shoreline on moving tides. Live shrimp, gold spoons and various jigs are good redfish choices.
- Mike Hopkins, Village Mart

Apalachicola Bay

No offshore reports have come in since Hurricane Katrina, but the number of dead fish indicates red tidehas beenoccurring in deeper water. Sharks are being caught off the bridge pier and the flounder were doing well before the storm. White grubs with pink tails were accounting for the majority of the flounder. Redfish are scattered throughout the bay.
- Rex Pennycuff, Fisherman's Choice

Port St. Joe

Rough conditions kept most off the water earlier in the week, but one of the area guides limited out on trout using rootbeer grubs on Wednesday. Scallops are still around, but they are harder to find in the murkier water. There haven't been any offshore reports lately. If the weather continues to improve, fishing in the bay should pick up again by the weekend.
- Eckley Sander, Presnell's Bayside Marina and RV Resort

Lake Talquin

This week has been very slow, but conditions should improve by the holiday weekend. Because of the storm and rain, the lake is muddy and drawn down approximately one inch. Bream were bedding in the shallows before the inclement weather.
- Josh Ingram, Ingram's Marina

Lake Seminole

Before last weekend the water was moving rapidly. Despite the swift current, the bream bite was strong in shallow water. Crickets suspended under corks were the preferred bait. The annual Labor Day Tournament will be held Sunday out of the boat basin.
- Jack Wingate, Wingate's Lodge

Other fresh water

Bream and largemouth bass are both biting well on earthworms in the Wakulla River.
- Juanise Hoover, Circle J's Bait and Tackle

You can subscribe to e-mail updates regarding red tide from myfwc.com.

This is an excerpt from the e-mail I recieved today. :smt011

NORTHWEST FLORIDA
A Florida red tide has been detected this week in St. Vincent Sound and western Apalachicola Bay. Water samples collected from Franklin County contained low to medium concentrations of Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism. Fish kills were reported in Gulf, Franklin, and Wakulla counties, and respiratory irritation was reported in Gulf and Franklin counties. Low to high concentrations of K. brevis were detected last week at several sites off the coast of Taylor and Dixie counties, and a sample collected this week from the Florida Middlegrounds contained low concentrations of K. brevis. It is unknown if this bloom is continuous with the current southwest Florida bloom. Monitoring will continue.

myfwc.com also has alot of free goodies they will send you in the mail. DVDs with Mark Sosin explaining floridas fish hatchery program, pamplets about most gamefish, ang boating or ramp maps. It's pretty good stuff and we might as well get our tax moneys worth, check it out at.

Red tide at St George. :(

Went down Saturday to fishin rebuilding our boardwalk, with the plan to head offshore Sunday morning. Lots of dead fish on beach on Sat, but nice weather, clear water, little wind, calm seas. Looked great for Sunday, so we worked hard to finish up the boardwalk. Got up early Sunday to a brisk wind out of the S/SE, and I went down to set things up on the boat. Immediately started to cough, but didn't think much about it until the wife comes out and starts coughing also. Then the burning eyes started, so we packed it in before we got started. Not many people were on the beach, and those that were didn't stay long. REALLY sucked as we were primed for some fishing. Going to try again this weekend though...
