Need Help Selecting New Reels

Post by Algaegator »

Hi all,

It has come time for me to replace my old inshore reels. I prefer light spinning reels with a line capacity of about 150 yds. 10 lb mono. My budget limits my price range to $50-$80 per unit. I would really like to buy three for less than $200.

I have looked for a while, and the choices are overwhelming. Right now I'm leaning toward the Penn 440SSG.

The features I want are as follows:

-durability
-reliability
-front drag
-left or right hand retrieve
-anti reverse
-lightweight (around 13 oz. preferred)

I know you folks have lots of experience with lots of tackle, and I eagerly await your advice.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Penn 420ss that I used and abused for years on everything inshore could toss at me. Great reel! I got my wife a Penn Slammer 360, and it is really, really nice, but a bit out of your range. Other reels we have are Fin-Nor Megalites 1000-4000. Fantastic reels, and while no longer made, they can still be had on eBay on a regular basis for around your price range. They can also still be factory serviced if needed. Personally I would not touch any other brand of reel other than Penn or the Fin-Nor Megalites in the <$100 price range.

Take a look at the Quantum Kinetic reels. I have several of them in the 20 and 30 size I use inshore fishing. The oldest one is going on 4 years old and still works great. Rinse with fresh water after each trip and a yearly clean and lube is all I do. They sell for $70 most places, but if you watch Ebay you can get brand new ones for around $45.
