Mid Week Red Tide Update from FFWCC

Post by T Smith »

MIDWEEK RED TIDE UPDATE, 09/13

In southwest Florida, background to low concentrations of Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, were confirmed in water samples collected on September 9 between Lely Barefoot Beach and the Naples Municipal Pier in Collier County. Weekly monitoring of Pinellas County offshore transects confirm that low oxygen conditions have not reestablished. Offshore aerial observations with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) staff using a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) plane and flight personnel are scheduled for Thursday, September 15. The current planned flight path will assess red tide populations west of Clearwater to the Florida Middle Grounds, then north to Apalachicola Bay before returning to Clearwater. In northwest Florida, shellfish beds in Apalachicola Bay will remain closed to harvesting until the red tide event is over.
