Will Redears and Bluegill hybridize in a farm pond? Do male and female shellcrackers both have the "redear"?

I don't think they will hybridize.

The male and female shellcrackers have the pronounce lobe on the ear and I think the female has a little less contrast.

I can remember catching a Shellcracker or two out of this pond when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure it has been 30 or more years ago. There were sure none in there when I put the Rotenone in it last year.

This makes me believe the information I got from the GA DNR about Shellcrackers not being prolific enough to maintain a stable population in a farm pond. I had wondered if they might interbreed and become assimilated.

At any rate, I'm putting all the Redears back and I hope to have some "dinner plate" size ones in a few years.

I did a google search and found some info.
Shellcrackers are not as prolific as bluegills(bluegills spawn on the new or full moon as soon as the water temp reaches 72 an continue on this cycle until the water drops below this point.)
That's almost 8 months around here and that a bunch of bream.
as far as gender goes I didn't find any pics showing the difference between them, but i did find a vague description on google search
Redear also have similar changes as the males are greenish all over while the females are somewhat yellow in appearance. The distinct red gill flap separates them from bluegill and usually they're larger and somewhat longer.

Do you guys have any idea what type of fish would be spawning right now?

I live on a small pond off Bradfordville Rd. north of Tallahassee and have had multiple beds with fish show up along my bank during the past couple of weeks.

Seems awful late in the year to me.

Warmouth perch maybe?

I will catch one of the little buggers as soon as I get a chance and let you know.

I don't know Steve, the little bit of rain and cooler weather we have had recently has got stuff up here acting like it is spring again. No fish spawning though.

Do people commonly stock Warmouth in ponds down there?

Bluegills will spawn until mid November unless we get some cooler weather.
I've seen farmpond largemouth try to spawn in september.
(I guess they don't have a calendar)
