bait situation in the BIG BEND

hey guys just wondering if you guys get many pilchards aka greenbacks up your way. and the months that they hang around. fished out of keaton last year in july and they were plentiful.thanks for any imput looking forward to spending more time up there.

cmon you have to know what a pilchard is "white bait" "green back" the bait of choice for all your inshore fish. it"s the "BAIT"

i,m starting to think you guys are into fishing. instead of catching but each to their own. but if you are really just doing it for sport you ought to have to use your hands or maybe graduate up to a spear.then you could claim that you really are a purist. heck i thought i was checking in on fellow rednecks. but i.m starting to think i found a site of SPORTS.

PURIST: a person who has to rely on live bait to catch a fish.
SPORTSMAN: a person who catches fish the old fashioned way,fool'em into thinking your artificial is LIVE.

P.S. and catches twice as many fish!!

dont start hating guys. just didnt realise who i was dealing with, i love SPORTS been making a living 11 years taking them catching. the beauty of fishing its available to all walks of life and can be enjoyed the same wether your fishing a creek bank with a cane pole or on the back of a 10 million dollar sports fisherman on the ocean. fishing is fishing and thats BEAUTIFUL

I,m pretty thicked skinned . but really i didnt see any one using the bait up there at keaton right after the storm in july last year and they were complaining that the water was all stirred up and what not. but me and the family could catch all the trout we wanted. day after day dindnt know anything about the waters what so ever. barely found enough scallops to eat though.

Its hard to beat live bait at Keaton somedays.

I would say that "the bait" around Keaton would be live pinfish. With pilchards, LY's, greenies,etc.. a close second. They are around during the warm months, about the same time the pelagics are around such as Spanish macks, cobia, blues. etc.. Exactly when they get here is difficult but the water has to warm up some. Could arrive as early as late March some years but could be latter others. OF course I speak of only inshore, they probably hang out all year but move to deeper water during the cold months.

Hey Snook, in all seriousness there are plenty of pilchards in this area. Yes they do catch nice fish. Not that many people net them or fish them here. Most don't know about their fish catching ability. The others don't know how to throw a net.
Pinfish are more readily available here and are utilized extensively. Shrimp also.
A number of people on this forum are tournament fishermen and are restricted to artificial bait. That restriction has taught us to catch more and better fish on artificial.
Some tournaments allow both artificial and live bait. Most people fishing those still use artificial bait.
Some people like Birddog can't spell artificial,but will use it anyway.

Bait in July at keaton produces alot of sharks, but alot of trout.....Never tried any green backs, we always caught pinfish and either fished them live or cut them into shiner tails...

Don't take what is said to heart, we like to have a good time...The old saying eat or be eaten comes to mind.

Welcome aboard....Tell us about some of them ruskin redfish or snook...
