Aucilla 5/03

Post by Koenig »

Got turned loose from Jury duty early on Wednesday and decided to head to the Aucilla. This would be my first fishing trip there. First mistake I put in way up river in that neighborhood. Second mistake, it was low tide. That river is SCAAARYYYY! I was dodging rocks all the way down. Then I get to the boat ramp near the coast, that I didn't know was there, and kicked myself for burning up daylight cuz it took me about 45 minutes to get to the flats. Those rocks had my stressed and going SLOW. By this point it was around 2:00pm or so. I didn't expect to catch much due to the unfamiliar turf. Started a drift straight out from the tower. Picked up two big sail cats, two trout, and lost two trout right at the boat. All trout where at 20'' or just under and healthy. All on live shrimp under cork. Since the wind was howling and the chop was about 2 to 3 feet I decided to try for reds at the reed lines up the river a bit. Saw something rounding up bait fish against the bank and tossed a gold spoon, hook up, keeper trout. Due to chop and wind had to move further in. I saw a ton of little bait fish, some where glass minnows and I think the others were pilchards. Anyways, working the reeds I picked up two reds on that gold spoon and messed up a few hook sets on a few more. After that I proceeded to spook every red I got near and didn't catch another. That water is pretty dark! Had to go cuz I knew I had a long ride. Dang sure better than working!

Totals:
Lost
-2 trout and 2 reds

Caught
-3 keeper trout 19to20
-2 reds around 16 to 18
-2 sail cats

Nice report. I didn't even think it was possible to get past some of the stuff between those two ramps. We sprung a leak before we could make it the one time I tried :smt013

Is it possible to go east or west to the flats of the aucilla without going out of the river-mouth? Thru creek systems? I was looking at the wind for Sunday, and was wondering if I could reach the east/west flats shorelines without having to do a lot of open water running.

Sorry to stick a question on your fishing report.

Thanks guys!

Littoral, I THINK those were pilchards, if so they were very small. Pilchards sure do make an awesome bait, I love fishing with them. So soft though...

TC, you said that was a good catch for Aucilla. That being my first trip over there, do most folks find it difficult to catch fish there?
