the test research has been done, to gulp or not to gulp?!?!?
Ok Guys, we did the test this weekend. My buddy fished only action type baits ie, SWA's, curly tail grubs, jerk type baits, and I fished stick baits and GULPS all morning. To say the least the action baits were the ticket. That afternoon, I wore his butt out with the Gulp(scent type baits). Here's my summation. Saturday am, very little current and no wind. Water was crystal clear. He fished the action baits where the current wasnt as big of a factor in carrying the scent of the Gulp and therefore he was more successful by using the action type bait where, as you all know , the Gulp baits dont have a ton of action. He had not only more strikes, he also had more aggressive strikes. As the wind and the current got up, the Gulp(scent bait) became more effective as the current made up for the lack of action and the scent was carried farther in the radius of water I was fishing. So my question is , to Gulp or not to Gulp and when? Do you guys agree with me or do you think Im nuts? I try to learn something new every trip to make me a better angler and this dilemna is very puzzling. I cant wait until Sunday when I get to go again. Taking my girlfriend for the ultimate test in limiting out. I want to see if angler enough to catch both of our limits while untangling her reel and putting sun lotion on her back!!! Oh yea and by the way, If I run up on any of ya'll this weekend, keep your eyes on my boat and not on my gal!!!!!!!

Although I use Gulp also, I continue to use an old favorite of mine and still catch plenty of trout on it. It is the old Zoom white fluke. The regular size, not the "super fluke". Drag it along the bottom on a 1/8th oz jig and the trout love it. I actually catch the larger trout on these. Also, the trash fish do not seem to bother these as bad.
And remember when you did not dare go out without a DOA shrimp? Never hear of them anymore, even though I still put them on a popping cork and catch fish with them also.
I also agree that the Gulps attract bait fish and trash fish quicker. Heck. if I want some pins for grouper, I just use a little piece of a gulp on a breambuster......
Like you guys have said, it is also that when a bait becomes "THE BAIT" it seems to catch more fish because it is used more.

The more I know about something, the more I know that I did not know as much as I thought I knew that I knew.

I still use the candy corn in SWA and I've got a couple of Bite-A-Baits in the same color that catch fishBAD BEHAVIOR wrote:Sounds about right. I wonder if anyone has been using candy corn or goose treuce lately. Those were my favs for a long time.

The lasts 6 trips I've used nothing but the Rapala X-rap and the skitterwalk and have out fished everyone I have fished with on my boat almost 5 to 1. I have used the gulp baits since they have come out and they do work. But I love to fish these X-rap. I ve caught reds, trout, blues, and macks with em and have bought 4 more of the same. The action of those things provokes some major strikes.
