Not Skunked Today...Carrabelle 3-21-08

Post by dolphinatic »

Me and Raymond headed back down to Carrabelle early this morning to meet Bman and family to try another day of offshore fishing. Weather did not permit yesterday and we were hoping that today's predicted forecast would be true.....windy morning but calmer afternoon. We stopped off at C-Quarters around 7:45am and waited on the fellas to arrive from Apalach.

Image

They finally drug up a short while later   and we headed out around 8:30am with a bit of a "breeze." We headed out towards the west end of Dog Island and were greeted with steady 4-5's :o We decided to just mosey on out and take our time. We took a little bit of a beating and decided to stop a few miles later and try a spot just to take a break from the pounding. We sat there for about 25 minutes with no action, so we moved on.

Got to the next spot about 30 minutes later in 45 ft. We got out the light tackle rigs and decided to play with the rock bass.....here's Bman with a nice one

Image

The rockies are quite plentiful on this spot, so we proceeded to catch them one after another with relative ease on jigs and squid. Here's Bman's pop-in-law (Dean) with a nice sand trout....

Image

After an hour and 50 or so rockies in the cooler, we decided to go try a grouper hole since the winds were calming a bit and the seas had decreased to 2-3's..

30 minutes later, we were at the spot. I circled the boat over the area numerous times trying to get a good mark on the spot. Finally, we had a good mark and a buoy out.....time to set the drift. On the first drift we made it within 20 ft. or so of the marker, so down went the lines. Right away Dean gets a hit......this would be often throughout the afternoon
First keeper of the day.....

Image

Then Bman gets a nice hit.......up comes this nice snapper just a few weeks too early.... :x

Image

Finally, the boys on the other side get involved....

Image

Image

Watching everybody else catch nice fish made me want to get in on the action. I finally baited up a line, and a few minutes later boated this beauty....

Image

Then, I found my first spanish of the year.....in 70 ft. :o ......

Image

Then Raymond got a good bite and found his first of the day....

Image

A short while later.....his second and biggest one of the day

Image

About 4:30pm, we decided to call it a day and head on back in. The seas had decreased to 1-2 ft and there was just a light breeze which made for a nice ride in.....unlike the trip out. Back at C-Quarters we unloaded the catch and posed for a few pictures and nearly got attacked by pelicans wanting our unused bait......

Then it was time to load up.....

The day started off rough, but we stuck with it and it paid off ending up to a great day on the water. We fished from 35-70ft. with all grouper caught in 70ft. No shallow grouper today.....just rock bass  Bait was cut LY's, spanish sardines, squid and live rock bass. Most of the big grouper were caught on live bait.

That's the rumor  We had 'em biting most of the time we were on 'em and all the grouper came off 1 spot :o We never had to move. We even had a few nice break offs and even sent back our share of shorts. There were also a few smaller scamps caught but released due to the number of nice sized gags that were biting. Strangely enough, we didn't find the first red grouper  If time would have permitted, Raymond was going to strap on a tank and go down to see what caused a few of the nice break offs :o Maybe next trip

FYI- Finished up cleaning the fish tonight. Got really lucky- Dad came by to get a grouper while I was out.
When I got back he had cleaned almost all of them! That is a biggie and will not be forgotten soon!!
