I don't see a noticeable difference in casting distance between mono and braid. Others might argue differently though.Good Times wrote: Hey Casey, do you get the same distance casting with the 12lb Big Game mono?
I use mono on my topwater rods and with twitchbaits - basically any lure that you can "walk". I like having the extra stretch in my line when setting the hook with these lures. Braid doesn't stretch and I think it's too easy to rip a trout's mouth open when setting the hook with braid using tw's and twitchbaits. Plus, most of the time with these baits, the fish are actually hooking themselves.
On my jig and TSS rods, I'll have braid on because a lot of times the fish will hit a long way from the boat. The line won't stretch (whereas mono would) and allows for the hook to penetrate better (just my opinion). When fish are a long ways from the boat, you don't have to worry about ripping their mouth open with an aggresive hook-set.
Braid can be a PITA though because backlashes aren't easily picked out and because it's expensive. Berkley Big Game is affordable, dependable, and does the job at a fraction of the cost.
I've also heard that instead of buying braid, some people will simply upgrade to 15-20 lb test mono because it won't stretch nearly as much as 10-12 lb will. Just my thoughts - hope it helps.
