A rock. Had the motor 3/4 speed and didn't see it.

Damn! The phrase, tear the brass horns off a billy goat, comes to mind.

Saw lots of reds on this flat. Cast past the fish. Work the bait back slow. Drag the bait up to the fish's head. The fish turns and swims off.This happened several times.

Ya' know, John, this may sound a little off-the-wall, but try something faster and noisier when they do that; like a buzzbait, or bulging a spinnerbait. Going for the reaction strike might work.
