Well, I was waiting for RodBow ta post this "since it is his email reply" :o but I will go ahead and share it with ya'll :-D This is from Mike Doyle at Red Dot Reels!

"wevans, received some surprising news from RedDot. See below. Made in USA isn't exactly correct about these reels.
**********************************************************************

Thanks David. I'll check out the Big Bend fishing forums. By the way, our Research & Development, Testing Facilities, Marketing and Administrative headquarters are in New Orleans. Our factory is in China.

The line was made for us in China. Notice we did not private label it! It was for our grand opening as give aways with purchases.

Please keep me posted! I want to know what you think and what you've caught!"

Gentlemen, I sincerely apolgize for my statement that Red Dot reels are made in the United States of America. I was mistaken. An inference was made that Red Dot was a "Gulf Coast" company. I drew an ill thought out conclusion. I had dialogue yesterday with one of the principles at Red Dot, some of our discourse follows:

>Are your reels made in the United States of America?

>Mike, thanks for the information. I had heard about your company on
WWL 870 AM one night on a fishing show out of New Orleans on one of my trips through the State of Florida.
>
>I have a little egg on my face because I understood from the radio show
and you website some time back that the reels were made in the USA. I
spread the word on your product and company at a regional fishing forum
based here in Tallahassee. Several of our members have purchased reels from you. Other forum members are anxiously awaiting wet trial reports on your reels.
>
I understand the market pressures that forced your company to locate
manufacturing overseas. That is regrettable, but not surprising. I,
like many folks in the south would prefer to purchase an American made
product from an American company. If your reels get positive feedback
from others on the forum, I will definitely be purchasing.

With your permission, I would like to share your previous reply and
explanation with my fellow forum members.

From Mike at Red Dot

Thanks for understanding. I believe that the WWL "Don Dubuc" radio show specifically indicated that Red Dot Reels was a "locally owned - Gulf Coast" company. I don't believe that they said the product was manufactured here, but I could be wrong.

You can read a very well writted review of our "Gulf Series" that includes pictures (inside and out) of one of our Gulf 5000 spinning reels at Hook and Sinker (West Coast forum) http://www.hookandsinker.com/reel/. It's probably the most objective and honest review that I have seen to date. Please share it with your fellow readers and by all means, do your own.

I got a lot of flack from my partners and other fisherman when I bought a Toyota Tundra pick up a couple of months ago so I'm going to put a sign on it that says "Made in Kansas, USA bu American Workers".

Trust me, I wish things were different but our country is just NOT what it used to be, nor is the rest of the world.

I'm trying to share some real solid, truly American ideas, beliefs and philosophy with my son (20yrs old going on 35)and I find him continuously arguing/debating those with his friends. It must be working! I'm an American inside and out, a Viet Nam veterean and a real believer in democracy, something that I feel, "we used to have here"!!!!

Mike

So my fellow forum members, I am very sorry for my inaccuracy. I will check and recheck my facts. I ask for your forgiveness, I am always learning.
for petes sake

My only report so far on the 6000 is that I am pleased with the way it operates.. so far.

There's not been a fish on it yet so I am relying on wevans faith in the SpiderwireXXX that it will perform in the adequate to superior cat.

Hope to get a fish on it tomorrow or Sat.

I have hade relativly few problems with mine  and I figure that those are mainly caused by the fact that I am scared to take it apart and clean it up  It has a ticking noise in it that has something to do with the bail, but it still works good and has seen a good bit of action also :smt004

I can't believe what I'm reading...

replacing Zebco's with anything other than newer Zebco's?

Surely that's at least a felony offense! :-D

My dad likes his, but he hasn't gotten to use it much. I'm stuck now myself on the Quantum Kinetic. I've bought two recently off Ebay for about the same price as one of the Red Dot reels. I have a total of three now. The oldest is a Kinetic PTi20 that I've had for 2.5 years now. It still performs flawlessly.

GC, I had contacted RD about a problem I was having with my new reel. It has a problem with the bail closure and seemed way premature to run into the problem. On the advice of RD, I made sure it was clean and it still didn't perform to par.
I haven't been in contact with Mike at RD since late June. At that time he said that they were coming out with a redesign "late summer" and was very proactive about a return of my reel for the later model.
Now that you've reminded me of it, I may take him up on his offer.

You may want to give them a try, keep in touch with them and if something goes wrong, I think they recognize the importance of making it right. Mike's address: mike@reddotreels.com

Alternatively, buy a Shimano, look after it and have a reel for your Grandchildren to use.
