Advice On Equiptment Please.

Post by fishfeeder »

I recently purchased a flats boat, and am tring to outfit it with a GPS and a good Bottom Machine. I just recently got back into Flats fishing, after spending the past 16 years focusing more of my efforts offshore (Tired of the long runs to deep water). Therefore I would like some advice on reasonably priced electronics for flats fishing?

Thanks A Million.

I love the Garmin 162 GPS for a great all around machine. We use it inshore and offshore. Very good one for the $ . Frank

For a shallow running flats boat, put most of your money in a good Mapping GPS and less in the fishfinder. A $120 eagle will suit you fine on the flats for a FF. Get a garmin mapping GPS like the 162 that was mentioned and get the bluecharts to go with them.

What Tom said. But I would probably spend the money for a Garmin 240 bottom machine.
What was I supposed to do today?

The 240 is a fishfinder only, the 162 is a chartplotter only. He was saying get the 240 Garmin over a cheap eagle.

You can shop online, find the best price then take it to West Marine and they will price match. That way if you do have a problem, you are dealing with a local store. The guys at West are great.

Equiptment

Sorry to keep asking questions but, I am also an avid hunter therefore I am thinking I would like to have a GPS for this activity also. Therefore is there a handheld unit that is good for both purposes? :smt021

Thanks Guys

Garmin GPSMap 76 or 76S would work fine. I have the 76S and it is a little more money but it has an electronic compass and altimeter as well as having 24 Mb of memory which is important if you want to use multiple maps like the TOPO Maps (for hunting) and the Bluecharts(for fishing) or Streets (for driving). If you get a handheld, make sure you get a 12v power cord and mount for the boat.
