Lannark 10/29/05

Post by mjsigns »

Mako showed up at my place at 0500, 30 minutes early so we got a great head start. We launched the boat from the Lanark ramp before sunrise Saturday. The tide was sooo low it was scary. Pre-dawn Water temp was 62.5, wind was 5 knots out of the north, pre-dawn it was cloudless starry with a small crescent of moon still showing. It was a long cold finger numbing run down to Turkey point marine lab.

First sight of the sun….

Tried first spot. No bites nibbles or takers. Wearing jackets, gloves and full face stocking caps we looked like a pair of sea bandits, but the extra layers kept us warm. What happened to that nice warm transition into winter?

Started getting the feeling there were no fish even though I could see them on the finder, they had lock jaw, even to a live shrimp. Moved south out off the western shoals and got a few nibbles. Tide was still so low that most of the high spots on the shoals were exposed. Where we were fishing, the water visibility was 4’. Gave up and ran around to the eastern shoals toward St Teresa beach area and hit some spots I had marked two weeks ago, ( http://www.bigbendfishing.net/phpbb/vie ... php?t=8153 ). Water temp 64.5 and was rising as the sun was rising 10:am. Started getting hits on electric chicken jig tipped with shrimp. WHAM keeper bluefish. AS I was bringing him to the boat he had two other buddies trying to steal the jig from his mouth. I thought I was going to get a cut-off right before my eyes. It was fascinating to watch. 22â€

Rodbow- yes I could have used the flash, but I intentionally didn't use it. We looked like a pair of outlaws...... "fishing bandits" we were wearing full-face coverage hunting pull-over masks. Your'e not supposed to see the faces behind the masks  They were on sale at Kmart last week buy one get one. Great way to save-face, and prevent wind burn. Just so you'll be happy, here is a manipulated version...

Noleflyfisher- I think I know were your red's are hiding. Turkey point shoals is a beautiful area if you can float in 8" of water.

GPS indicated we traveled 27.3 miles and the time on the water was 9 hours and 50 minutes. What a way to spend the day..... :-D[/img]

Loose lips sink ships. Just kidding. Actually, I fished yesterday and saw fish on five different flats. There is LOTS of great water between Alligator Point and St. George Island. BTW the fish were extremely tough yesterday morning; probably because of the temperature drop. They started to eat a lot better once the sun got up and heated the water in the afternoon. Might be why you had a tough time convincing them to eat. Also, I'd put away the chug bug and through a spoon or jerk worm/doa to the fish if they are real skinny. I've never done real well sightcasting with topwater. :-?
