You may want to consider a jet drive in the future if you're in an area with a lot of rocks. I know folks who use them and they can run in 4" of water or less with them in some of the small rocky rivers around here. It just takes more engine HP to get the same speeds that you may be use to with your prop, though if you're running in a rocky area most of the time, speed is probably your furthest concern.

Good luck!

Porter's Skeg Guards

Post by Steve Stinson »

Another vote for Porter's here. I just had one installed a few weeks ago on my 150 Yamaha. Since then, I managed to hit yet another rock. At idle speed, the rear of my boat lifted slightly, then dropped back down on the other side of the rock.
They will not help you if your doing 30mph, but at idle or near idle speed, they are worth every penny.

Prior to getting the guard installed, I hit a rock near Cobb's rock. Removed the stock skeg completely, damaged every blade on the stainless prop, and bent the prop shaft. To fix all of those items, Mr. Porter's bill was less than $300.00.

I had someone (who is quite reputable) tell me he would not suggest putting one of Wavel's gaurds on my 200 Yammie.
Why do you think he would say that? What do you think the detriment would be?

skeg guard

Post by dowawoo »

Well I nailed a rock at 30 mph, was blessed that day, bought a skeg guard, called insurance company and uped my coverage's and now take it slow, if in doubt , go slower, I use my gps map and keep it updated, and it has worked for me so far..
I by the way now live in the Crystal River area, so rocks and oysterbars are all over the place.
