For your purposes, PVC pole is gonna be fine. Just make it a short length of pipe. I wouldn't go more than about 6 - 8 ft. Then keep it out of the sun when you're not using it and you can even build you a new one every other year or so since it's so cheap.

If I was going to pole around on the flats all day, however, I would get something specifically designed for that purpose.
