OFFICIALLY a Kayak Fisherman now. First Kayak Fish.

Post by RonHarrison »

This was about my fourth fishing outing in my new Hobie Outback. I've been spending just about as much time getting used to the kayak and my gear as fishing. I'm also pretty new to artificials and really trying to reteach myself fishing!

With all of that said, I finally caught my first fish from a kayak. I'm now OFFICIALLY a kayak fisherman! Isn't she a beauty!

She's no hawg, but she was fun to catch and finally get the monkey off my back.

I went on to have three more hookups, but lost them all before getting them in the boat. I need to work on my hook set and fishing the lilly pads and grass of Lake Iamonia in general. Lost ALL of them in the pads/grass.

Here's another pic of "Number 1" that better shows the Lake Iamonia surroundings.

Of the other three hookups, two were this size or smaller. One might have gone 4 - 5 lbs and I would have loved to have gotten that one in and photographed. It hit my Snagless Sally with Pork Frog about 4 feet from the boat and in a wad of grass. I just couldn't get a good enough/quick enough hookset. It then boiled around in the goo and promptly got off.

Another interesting thing on today's trip was watching a small bass make a kamikaze drive at my bait about five feet from the kayak only to miss and terrorize a lilly pad stem. I think I laughed out loud on that one.

Was a great afternoon and I'm even more hooked on kayak fishing than ever before now!!!

Hey Ron,
Great report and a very nice fish! We need to get together for a trip to Lake M.B. so I can get a pic of you hauling in that hog that straightened out your hook a while back! You game??
Best,

Nice fish, Ron.

What kind of rod are you using for bass? That might be your hook set problem.
What was I supposed to do today?

Hi there and thanks for all of the comments! Sorry about the delay in posting, but I've had some Internet issues of late and this site is blocked by my place of employ... ... :smt014

Apalach, the fish that straightened out my hook was also in Lake Iamonia. That lake, and it's boat ramp, are only about 1/4 of a mile from my house so it's my stomping ground. God what a beautiful place. I'm damned and determined to become a lilly pads and grass specialist. One of these days... ...I'll be able to give you all tons of pointers on fishing this stuff!

Apalach, I can't wait to get you out on Lake Iamonia and Lake Monkey Business! I actually have an opening on my dance card and will post separately to try and lure some of the good folks here in.

As for the rod I'm using, it's a 6.5' Medium-Heavy action. I have to be honest here and assume that it's less about the equipment and more about the person holding that equipment. I'm really, really new to fishing artificial and it's been quite some time since I've consistently held a rod for any type of fishing. I'm really trying to relearn the basics and introducing the whole world of artificials while doing so. Oh yeah, add in that I'm doing it all from a large chunk of floating "plastic"! Bwahahahaha!

As for being hooked, that's an understatement! This addiction is bad!!! I've had a number of other kayak fisherman tell me that I should have taken up crack cocaine instead. They swear it's cheaper and less-addictive. Hehehehehe.
