VHF radio question?

Most radios have dual or tri-watch to monitor 2 or 3 channels at once dont they?

I normally have my handheld on while out in the kayak. Shields normally isn't a problem and last time out I was getting the marina in Keaton, but can't hear anyone else unless they're close. Never tried talking to anyone. Mainly just have it for safety purposes.

Thats what I'll be on down there from now on
