Aucilla 2/24/08

Post by captkeyser »

We put in off of Mandalay Rd. around 9:30 am. It was low tide and I was unsure if we would be able to get the boat off of the trailer. After a few minutes of pushing the boat slipped off of the trailer and my buddy Justin pulled her to the dock. The tide was a .3 low which isn't sooo bad, right? So we slowly manuvered down river from the landing until we reached the island. Enough is enough, putting is for the birds. "Hold on Justin, this ain't the smartest move" and we were off.

Free as birds we were. Wind in our hair, lures on our line, rods in the holders, gas in the tank.......... BANG!!! :o Skeg on the rocks. It is times like these that make you understand how much you truely love fishing. You see, Justin's reaction was one of pure concern for the cost involved with what just happend. Or at least this is what the look on his face was meant to show me. My concern should have been the same, but it wasn't. The only concern in my mind was "shit, will it still get us there?" After raising the motor and giving a quick look over we decided all was good, these things happen.

Skegless and running, minus a leaf on the prop, we hobbled over to our spot. My buddy wanted a red, but I love my trout. The reds were everywhere, but out of range.

We moved into a creek and caught a 22" trout on a bomber and a 24" red on a spinner.

Finally the tide moved in enough to bang the shoreline. Nothing. I was getting a little frustrated at this point, I couldn't let my buddy down. "Let's head to the trout spot" I said. Cheers   and we were off.

We drifted up on the spot and instantly doubled up, two 21" trout. I dropped the anchor and we proceeded to land 7 more trout all in the 20" to 21" range. All were caught on 7" Bass Assasin. It was a great ending to an aggravating day.

Analysis: Structure, Structure, Structure. I thought that the fish would be sunning on the mud banks on high tide, but they weren't. They were holding on rocks.

The boat is in the shop as I type. Insureance is covering the $1500 bill. God bless Progressive.

The Aucilla is pretty scary. Sorry to hear about the skeg.

Hopefully you'll be back in action by the 8th!

I have a little Aucilla nick in my Skeg. Got while I was idling out. Those rocks come out of nowhere. :o Beautiful river though. As Scott (JBT) always used to say, "The Jewel of Northwest Florida." Followed by, "I'm out of Gulp, wanna buy some shrimp."
