ST. MARKS 3-27-04

Post by dolphinatic »

This is a first, but I couldn't find anyone to go fishing with me today....so I went by myself. Another friend of mine was going to St. Marks, so I decided to head there and maybe hook up with him.

I put in at the fort at 8:15 and headed out towards the lighthouse. When I got to the channel, I decided to troll on my way out. Almost immediately, my line started screaming :o . A few minutes later, I boated a nice 24" spanish. That's was a good way to start the morning, so I decided to try it again. About 2 minutes later...BAM! Another spanish...20". I continued to do this all the way out to the birdrack, weaving in and out of the crabtraps. On just one pass, I had 5 spanish ranging from 20" - 24" . By this time, I wasn't too concerned about finding my friend out there. I ended up trolling the entire day, stopping once to throw a few grubs just west of the birdrack. I boated 3 spanish there and got broke off 3 times. I lost 4 others right at the boat and had to chase another one that just didn't want to come towards the boat. Needless to say, the spanish are everywhere. I was wore out around 3:30 and decided to head on in.

TOTAL FOR THE DAY: 10 SPANISH (15" - 34") HAD TO THROW THE REST BACK!!!! :x .

Dolphin:

By the way, not that you need to, but the limit on spanish is 15, not 10.

EddieJoe, Surely he meant the others were undersized instead of too many!

CORRECT.....I threw back the smaller ones and the few that were not 12". I like to eat them within 2-3 days after their caught and the ones I did keep were more than enough. Not only could I not find anyone to go with me yesterday, I didn't know of anyone who would want some extra spanish. So, I decided to not fool with too many......just catching them was fun enough!

I washed the pollen off the boat and went to the lighthouse around 11:30 Saturday morning. Went about 1.5 mi pass Grey Mare and idled in. My friend was fishing with a CT with a live shrimp and I tried various other things. Neither of us had any luck until I dug out the "victimizer" that Capt Vic Davis gave out samples of at a NFGFC meeting. After I caught four trout my friend asked if I had any more of "those". By the time the fish tore up the only four I had we had 6 trout in the cooler and released about 2 dozen more. Finished the day using SWA and added 4 more trout and a 22" mack to the cooler.

The water was clear as glass - definitely a bluebird kind of day.

Dolphinatic - what were you trolling with? I tried some with a silver mack spoon but only got one bump.

I used a Clark-Spoon 2-RBMS (silver)......the one with the orange bead on the swivel. How far back were you trolling and at what depth (of water)? The reason I ask is that I had no luck in any depth over 10 ft. and nothing under 7 ft. All the macks hit between 7-10 ft. I also had to troll at least 150 ft. back because I had no luck with anything shorter.

I lost my favorite spoon Saturday because some fool just had to cut across the flats right behind me  ....oblivious to the fact that I was trolling! He had the entire area, but chose to go right behind me. He nearly spooled me before the line cut loose. This is one of the rare times that I wished he would have taken the entire spool....right around his prop. Come to think of it, there were alot of fools on the water this past weekend. The biggest was at the end of the day when I got back to the fort. There were 5 or 6 boats tied off at the dock waiting to load when this IDIOT in a huge, loud speedboat came flying right through the wake zone and didn't stop till he got to the public pier! He sent 3-4 ft. swells into shore knocking 2 boats away from the dock. No man of course...everybody must have been legal. Oh well........my venting is done! Hope this info helps.

Dolphinatic,

I certainly wasn't trolling within those depths. I only trolled while slowly going in from the stake line towards shore into about 3' water then out again at the end of the day. So b/w 3'-5' - guess I was too shallow but what the hey I had to go slow anyway. I did have the line far enough back tho. Since I really want to catch something besides a ladyfish trolling I'll try out deeper this next weekend. Thanks for the input.

PS
Lets hope the boat drivers don't get as rude and careless as the car drivers are. Glad you didn't let one ruin your day - it was just to pretty.
