Evinrude stuck in forward

Anybody have any idea what would cause my motor gear shift to be stuck in forward. Our local outboard mechanic had surgery, and will be out for another two weeks, and I want to go fishing :evil: . It's a early 80's model.

Reminds of time I was fishing the Ochlocknee river and noticed a squirrel easing out on a willow limb trying to reach two hickory nuts sitting on top of a an old cypress stump. He was right near the end where the limb bent over the stump, and all of sudden lost his grip. He anxiously began swimming ...
