I like to fish chrome, 3/8 oz, Devil's Horse, but the only fish that like to hit them are: trout, reds, flounder, jack cravelle, Spanish mackerel, tarpon, lady fish, sail cats, cobia, and various species of sharks. :D

I've heard those are hard to fillet and pretty tough and crunchy. That looks like a younger one of the species, though. I've never caught one, but I have seen them diving and they seem to be very sedentary. Prefering to camouflage themselves with marine growth. I've also seen them over here, so they...

For trout, reds, blues, flounder, mackerel, mullet, etc., I scale, mackerel and blues get scrapped with a knife, head, mullet fillet and wash. After that the cook can cut them up any way she wants. The exception to this is if it's going on the grill it doesn't get scaled. :lick:

Next time you get a white soft plastic torn up save it. When you want pin fish, rig a #6 or 8 hook on a light spinning rod with a split shot 8-12" above it. Cut a narrow sliver about 3/4" long from your white soft plastic and hook it one time through near one end. You won't have to cast th...

Sorry this is a little late to help you for that trip, Cooter, but I just got back this week from a business trip. If I were putting in at Shell Point the first place I would go is either the first or second bend in the old Shell Point Channel. After that I would try around the edges of the little g...

The rock garden is an excellent area for trout and reds. Also, during scallop season we always carried a couple of pole spears on the boat for the flounder and sheephead around the rocks. :D

:D You were here before me then CS. My first time here was in '86. This is my third time around with another tour on the mainland at Camp Fuji. We're up early on Sunday. I'm taking #1 (10 yr old son) spearfishing at Tengan this morning. Back before I enlisted some friends of mine and I would head ou...

I've had bonito. The Japanese fillet it out skinless and boneless, then dry it, for up to a year or more. The first time I saw it was at the in-laws house. I thought it was a chunk of oiled red cedar. They shave it just like running a hand plane over a block of wood, then use the shavings for...

I sometimes put a small planer in front of a spoon. Other times I'll put a 1/2 oz. egg sinker in front of the leader. With mackerel I haven't noticed that either method catches more fish than pulling a spoon with just a leader in front of it. I think mackerel are speedy and active enough to nail it ...

Jumptrout is right when that north wind is in conjunction with a full moon. What I have found is that a lot of times in this situation the fish, particularly reds, trout and flounder, will be concentrated in the deeper holes at the mouths of the tidal creeks. Getting to them is the problem. What I h...

I used to use the improved clinch knot. Sometime awhile back I went to the uni-knot for all practical applications.
