Re: A question for my brother-in-law...Kayak Scallops?
I'm doubtful that sharks pose much of a real hazard scalloping or in any other activity in calm, clear water. I suspect most bites happen when the shark mistakes a person for something else because of low visibility. I fished off a pier throughout the 70s and early 80s on Okaloosa Island. You can ...

Re: Boating after dark in the Keys
In the there but for the grace of god department. . . . I was taken on a nighttime tour of the upper keys on a flats boat at a very high rate of speed in the summer of 1988. The driver had a lot of experience, but if we had been unlucky we could have ended up the same way or worse. God protects ...

Re: Scallop Advice
We've gone twice out of St. Marks. The first time was about 2 weeks ago. We had a hard time mostly looking around the giant scallop armada. We picked up a couple gallons, but they seemed few and far between. Tried a different spot last Sunday with much better results. My suggestion is that if you go ...

Re: Simple Redfish Setup Question
One other thing. I carry a bait rod which is an ultralight with 4-6 lb mono and a four foot rod rigged with a size 14 bream hook and a split shot. I take a frozen squid to use for pinfish bait. One squid lasts all day since one tentacle is often good for 3-4 pinfish. With that hook on the grass ...

Re: Please help -- Redfish fishing out of St. Marks
I've had a similar experience to you, but have started to have success two ways. First is poling along the shoreline blind casting a suspending plug. Second is anchoring up outside an oyster bar when the tide is coming in hard and pitching a tiny pinfish up to the bar . Rig for this is line through ...

Re: Simple Redfish Setup Question
In shallow water around the oyster bars I've had good success with weighted worm hooks (for bass fishing) with a live finger mullet or pinfish hooked through the lips. The other rig is line through 1/4 to 1/2 ounce egg sinker to swivel to 18 inch 30 lb leader to small #2 circle hook. Either one will ...

Re: Costa Rica In March
My family and I went to Quepos (which is the town nearest to Manuel Antonio National Park) about 4 years ago for Spring Break in March. We fished two days offshore and caught 8 sailfish. We raised a giant marlin but it didn't eat. We caught one dolphin about 40 pounds and two giant weird pacific ...

Re: Advice for wade fishing St Marks
the old pier pilings are another good spot. They are full of oysters in between the pilings and you can wade very carefully out to the end, depending on the tide. All the usual baits work. I've tried subsurface plugs recently, especially Yozuri Pin's Minnow with good success. I have a good friend ...

You might try a buff. All the protection, no chemicals. And they come in cool fish patterns like speckled trout: https://www.buffwear.com/catalog/produc ... ts_id/1057

10/17 St. Marks Report
I had about 1.5 hours to fish after the high tide on Sunday. I freelined live shrimp and fished topwater around oyster bars. I saw lots of activity. The only catch was 1 short redfish and a 23' trout (my personal best). Oh, and a stingray. Beautiful afternoon on the water. All catches on the live ...

Re: Some General Help?
Trout, realistically. I've done pretty well with trout on topwater and suspending plugs.
I've had very little success with redfish, although in the late summer I caught a nice one drifting the bars around big pass with a live finger mullet, but that was on a high tide. However I've repeated that ...

Some General Help?
I'm fishing tomorrow out of St. Marks. I have not gotten to go much in the last month and I don't have a lot of experience fishing the in fall anyway. Any thoughts tomorrow on a general strategy? East or west of the St. Marks? Flats, bars or creeks? I'm going early and low tide is at about 10 am ...

Re: St. Marks 8/7
I always hook mullet through the lower jaw and nose. They stay alive a long time that way and you can work them a little bit. It is easy to throw them off though.
