I use a similar, if not identical, knot that I know as the Sebile knot. I tie it differently, but the outcome is the same. I've seen it tied a third way, too. I like it a lot. It has never failed. It doesn't clack going through the guides.

Found small pamphlet at Marine Specimen Aquarium entitled Historic Seine Fisheries of Wakulla County by Davis Roddenberry. Tells how it was done in the old days.
